Sailing blocks are used for rope hauling to quickly allow a change in sail direction with minimal friction and effort. All blocks have three basic parts: cheeks are the outside of the block and the sheave or pulley lies between. Metal straps and pins clamp the sheaves together to complete the assembly. Extra fittings can be attached like beckets and loops to assist with connections.
